With a tight urban site it became apparent that every space had to be evaluated and its use maximized. The idea of ‘FREESPACE’ was born. Hallways needed to serve the function of circulation and break-out activities (i.e. 1-on-1 tutoring or reading). Egress stairs consumed too much interior space with only a single function - so (1) was pushed to the exterior and combined with a roof deck & private courtyard at grade. Classrooms were oriented to have immediate access to the secure private outdoor areas. These are a few of the early decisions that contributed to an exceptional educational facility.
